Sydney is a really popular city to visit.  It’s the biggest city in Australia, and there are loads of things to do and see in and around the city.   For families, there are many great places to visit which would make a fantastic holiday with kids.  You can even stay right in the heart of Sydney, like we did at the Intercontinental Hotel.  Here are some suggestions for things you can do with kids (or without) when you’re in Sydney, Australia! 

1: Bondi Beach & Icebergs Pool

Bondi Beach is one of those iconic places that everyone should visit when they come to Sydney.  What’s great is that it’s just a bus ride out from the city centre – it takes about half an hour on the 380 or 333 bus from Martin Place (the stop is outside The Statesman Hotel).  Or you can catch the train to Bondi Junction then change for a bus to Bondi Beach (it takes about 45 minutes).

Sydney is a city with many great activities for families. From the zoo to the harbor, Sydney offers fun for adults and children of all ages. Below you will find some of the best places to visit in Sydney with your family.

1. Taronga Zoo – Taronga Zoo has hundreds of animals and is located right on Sydney’s harbor. They have a cable car that takes you up to the zoo or you can walk on their nature trail. You can spend a day here watching the animals and taking in the pretty views of the harbor. Be sure to check out their calendar for special events and shows going on throughout the year.  2. Australia Wildlife Park – This park has some of Australia’s best wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, wombats, crocodiles, cassowaries and Tasmanian devils! 1. Visit the Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens is one of the best free attractions in Sydney for families. There are many shady areas and lots of space to run around. Kids love looking at the beautiful flowers, trees, birds and fish in the ponds.

2. Picnic on Goat Island

A picnic on Goat Island is a lovely way to spend a few hours as a family in Sydney. Bring your own food or buy it at Woolwich Pier Hotel before catching the ferry across to Goat Island.

3. Climb the Pylon Lookout

Climbing the Pylon Lookout gives kids (and adults!) an excellent view over Sydney Harbour Bridge and an insight into how it was built. The walk up is fairly strenuous but there are plenty of stops along the way and fantastic views from the top!

How to Spend a Day in Sydney with Kids  Whether you’re visiting Sydney for the first time, or you’ve lived here forever, there are plenty of places you can go to keep the kids entertained.

Circular Quay and The Rocks  This is one of the best places to visit in Sydney with kids. This area is home to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, so it’s definitely a must-see!

Visiting The Rocks and Circular Quay itself will take no more than a couple of hours, but you can make an afternoon out of it easily by adding some additional activities.

Things to do in The Rocks and Circular Quay:

Explore Circular Quay – You can wander around here for free and check out views of Sydney Harbour and all its surrounding attractions. There are also food stalls and cafes at Circular Quay if you need a snack or bite to eat (or an ice-cream!).

Visit The Museum of Contemporary Art – This art museum is great for kids as they often have interactive displays on offer. Their current exhibition looks great for little ones! Entry costs $10 per adult ($8 concession), kids under 16 are FREE! Located on Circular Quay,

The Sydney Opera House is steeped in history and is one of the most iconic buildings in the world. The World Heritage-listed building, designed by Jorn Utzon, is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Opera House has plenty of family-friendly activities including guided tours, theatre shows and concerts. Kids can also take part in a variety of workshops during the school holidays.

Sydney’s most famous landmark is a magnificent sandstone arch that stands 134m above sea level. It’s a great place to visit with kids because there are a number of fun activities for children at the site. Families can enjoy an organised climb up to the top of the bridge, take a leisurely stroll across it or learn about its history and construction during a guided tour.

Sydney Aquarium is located near Darling Harbour and is home to thousands of marine animals including sharks, turtles and dugongs. Children will love watching the sharks swim overhead as they walk through an underwater tunnel and they’ll be amazed by the sheer size of the giant stingrays that are housed in one of the aquarium’s main tanks. Kids can even get up close with sea creatures during scheduled feeding sessions.
