When I travel, I pack light. I generally only bring a carry on, even if it’s an international trip. I’ve flown around the world with just a carry on and my backpack. If you pack right, you can travel indefinitely without checking any bags.

My packing list is based on my years of experience traveling to all sorts of climates, from cold snowy mountains to hot humid beaches. Based on my experiences and what I’ve learned along the way, here are my 15 packing tips for your next vacation.

1) Pack as light as possible

If you have a carry on sized bag, fill it up! It’s tempting to use all that extra space in your luggage just because it’s there, but don’t do it! You really don’t need much and by packing light you’ll be more flexible and mobile for the entire trip. If you pack everything you think you might use, you probably won’t even touch half of it anyway.

2) Plan outfits ahead of time

If you’re going to be traveling for an extended period of time, it’s important that you pack effectively. Packing well will make your trip more enjoyable and less stressful. If you’re not sure where to begin, here are some great packing tips for your next vacation:

1. Pack light. This is the first step to effective packing. Along with being a practical tip, it’s also good advice for life in general. The less stuff you have, the easier it is to pack and move around. If you’re going to be doing a lot of traveling, you only want to bring what you really need.

2. Bring a backpack rather than a suitcase. Unlike suitcases, backpacks can be carried on your back or worn like a sling bag, giving you more freedom of movement. It helps to bring something that won’t weigh you down too much and that is easy to carry wherever you may go.

3. Pack clothes that are versatile and can be easily mixed and matched with each other. You don’t want to bring items of clothing that can only be worn twice before having to be washed or cleaned, because this means more laundry for you! Be sure to think about what types of clothes go well together so that you have plenty of outfits ready
